In order to receive credit for this assignment you must answer the entire question. Failure to address any part of the question will result in you failing the assignment.
DO NOT post using your name. Please use your student number (The one I use to post grades OR the one I gave you to put on the essays we write in class), so that the comments are genuine and people do not get their feelings hurt.
Directions: For the following prompt you must write and essay that:
- has a a relevant thesis and support that thesis with correct, historical evidence,
- addresses all parts of the question,
- makes direct relevant comparisons,
- and analyzes reasons for similarities and differences.
Once you have written your essay, please proof read it before posting it to the blog. Also, refrain from using any of the following in your posts: LOL, LMFAO, :), :-), :(, :-(, etc.
Once you have posted your essay, please take the time to read and comment on three other people's essays. You need to give them a grade (A,B,C,D,F, etc.) and explain why they deserve that grade. For example, student #2, your essay lacks a thesis and seems to be a summary of the experiences of Latin America during the Great Depression. Also, you failed to address Africa, or make any relevant comparison of the two regions. You did not address the entire question, use historical evidence, or structure your essay in a way that would have made it easy for the reader to follow. For these reasons, your essay deserves an "F."
Please be aware that your grade will not be affected by the grades your peers give you. However, your grade will be affected by the grades you give others. You must reference specific reasons for the giving the essay a grade. Simply stating that you didn't think it was good, or that it was very well written will not get you credit for the assignment.
Due Dates: Your essay is due by midnight on Monday, April 25, 2011. Your comments are due by midnight on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Please limit your writing time on the essay to 40 minutes (which, according to all of you, is significantly less time that it takes you to do your notes).
Happy posting,

Due to the great depression in the 1930s Latin America and Africa both experienced similar but also different outcomes. For example in Latin America the disruption of global politics led to the reassessment of the U.S. foreign policy. While in Africa new social classes emerged.
ReplyDeleteIn Africa colonial rule by the European stayed the same during the great depression. This stayed the same because Europeans had better technology like guns. But European companies that controlled African export trade suffered because their trade fell at least by half and the prices fell as well. The great depression also raised the tax price. Farmers that owned land, houses, livestock, and people had to become a cash crops farmer which means that their crop had to go directly to the market or they had to seek wage labor in plantations and in mines. Many Africans were forced to work. Colonialism helped create new African social classes. A physician and a lawyer were considered to be in the elite class.
During the great depression Latin America Nicaragua for example people had trouble with U.S. interventions. So the United States wanted to make peace with Latin America. In Nicaragua Anastacio Somoza was a U.S. commander of the coast guard he took over Nicaragua and made it a good neighbor to the U.S. President of the U.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt wanted to approach Latin America in a good manner so he called it “Good Neighbor Policy”. Also during the great depression Lazaro Cardenas president of Mexico nationalized the oil industry. Furthermore Mexican migrants came to the USA to work in agricultural and industrial jobs. But during the great depression thousands of Mexican migrants were deported.
In all both Latin America and Africa both had similar but also different changes due to the great depression. Africa changes were mostly based on trade while in Latin America it was mostly based on getting along with the United States. Due to the changes many people suffered and died.
During the Great Depression Africa and Latin America experienced many negative effects such as losing jobs. Also somewhat good things came to be from the Great Depression for example new opportunities with foreign places.
ReplyDeleteAfrica and Latin America went through depression during the Great Depression. The reason for these places struggling was jobs declining. Africa's primary products sharply went down causing job losses. In Latin America their exported agriculture products prices fell dramatically so work was scarce and raised taxes on foreign trade. These things dryed up their capitals.
New events happen with Latin America and Africa that hepled during the Great Depression. Latin America created new enterprises and had more communication with the U.S. to become good neighbors. In Africa farmers cultivated cash crops for better financial improvement. Taxes passed on so new jobs formed like mining and exporting goods to Europeans due to the places in Africa were run by whites.
Overall Africa improved by taxing land, homes, livestock, and people themselves which made new jobs in cash crops and mining. While in Latin America it strengthen it self by being more the Good Neighbor Policy and experiments.
The Great Depression was a worldwide economic depression that had bad effects in almost all countries including both Africa and Latin America. Both of these countries had similar effects in general, but not always specifically the same. For example, the Great Depression caused a fall in the demand for both South African and Latin American exports, despite the fact that they had different exports and were in different locations.
ReplyDeleteThe Great Depression had both political and economical effects on Africa , as it did with Latin America and many other countries at the time. The lack of demand caused by the depression destroyed the incomes of African farmers, causing them to lose their farms and land. Although the Great Depression dropped the demand for Africa’s agricultural exports, it raised the demand for gold. Many thought that the high demand for gold was their recovery from the loss of demand for other exports. During this time many Africans were forced to work growing cash crops giving them nothing in return.
In Latin America at the time of the Great Depression, agriculture was affected just as in Africa, but also mining. Like Africa with gold, the production of oil saved Latin America from losing all profits. They had to raise taxes on foreign trade because of the loss profits from the unwanted exports, which also happened is Africa as well.
The Great Depression made its marks on both Africa and Latin America which were very in similar in ways. In both countries many people lost their jobs, as well as their bank accounts and the farmers were completely let down.
330621 - Your essay deserves a B, because it doesn't exactly state the comparisons between Africa and Latin America.
ReplyDeleteNothing ever in the history of mankind has ever had a greater effect on the whole world than the great depression. No war no natural disasters nothing since as long as man has recorded such worldwide event has ever even come close to the great depression. Times were the question was am I going to live the next day? Worldwide the depression was a plague and affected almost every single man living in those times. In this case Latin America and Africa two continents separated by the Atlantic were not an exception and were affected by the Great depression in similar and different ways. Africa dominated in its entirety by European countries depended in its rulers and their economies while Latin America was practically all free but the depression led to many changes such as fascism and changes in government.
ReplyDeleteThe Great Depression made it difficult for people’s independence. People in Africa were dependent on European Manufactured goods but sometimes their trade was even cut back to half the goods and commodity prices dropped a lot. Colonial taxation was very important because it gave Africa a push to labor. Also a lot of African farmers had to become cash crop farmers or seek wage labors on plantations to get money so that they paid taxes on land, live stalk and people themselves. This made people give up stuff they had just to be able to live. At this time the markets were mostly ran by Europeans and they took advantages of the African labor. For example southern Africa’s government reserved 88% of the land for the white people while there was only 20% of whites their. Something that really affected families was that the males went out migrating mining in mines for gold, copper and diamonds while they only got paid minimal wage. The absence of the men at home was hard for families because they didn’t get much money and the wives left behind couldn’t grow enough food for all the children and relatives. Families were suffering not only for food but for their own family members and their absences. Africans were forced for labor they got about 10,000 a year but 5 years after about 20,000 Africans died because of starvation, diseases, and because they were maltreated. Africa was affected by the Great depression badly.
The extremely high rate of exportation was a huge factor for Latin America’s demise. Knowing that Latin America depended on its exportation of goods also considering that all export revenue came from primary products that were being shipped to four important countries that felt the depression in its entirety. The United States, Great Britain, France, or Germany couldn’t buy those products because of the great depression Latin America suffered. The world crisis in this time also led to many changes in Latin American government. During 1930 there was a serious of coups that often involved the military. In May President Hernando Siles of Bolivia was over thrown. In August President Augusto Leguia of Peru resigned. In September General Jose Uriburu led his forces to overthrow President Hipolito in Argentina. In October, Gétulio Vargas assumed power in Brazil as a dictator and later became a president. In Cuba the over throw of President Gerardo Machado led to the Cuban revolution. All this happened because of the great depression. People were so mad because of the depesiion that they overthrew a lot of presidents.
Africa and Latin America were both affected by the Great depression in different ways but they both suffered economically somehow. This was really hard for people because they suffered in many ways. The Great Depression was a big impact on the whole world.

Africa was affected by the Great depression badly." i love this from your essay its great evidence!!
ReplyDeleteThe great depression was a war with impacting outcomes Latin America and Africa both had different and similar experiences during the great depression. The great war caused Latin America to change their attitudes and beliefs, while in Africa their colonial economies suffered as trade and volume prices fell dramatically.
ReplyDeleteLatin America was influenced for change in their beliefs. Much of th change is due to the Marxism and Lenin's theories on imperialism. Another factor is the concern for workers shaped the views of many intellectuals and artists.
In the other hand we had Africa's colonial economies suffering as trade and volume prices fell dramatically. Farming and mining were the main projects in colonial economies. In order to pay taxes Africans beame cash crop farmers or wage laborers.
