Everyone:
So, as I Tweeted yesterday, I hate losing bets. In reality, though, who doesn't. I'm willing to bet there aren't very many people who make bets with the hope of losing miserably. I'm also willing to bet there are not very many people who actually enjoy losing. The reason(s) I hate losing bets are numerous. I don't so much mind being wrong, it happens. We, from time-to-time, should be wrong. We should take risks and challenge ourselves. For example, I'm going to try to play soccer this Friday. The last time I played soccer was last year. I was sore for four days. Before that, though, I hadn't played a soccer game in 13 years. Was I expecting to go out there and dominate? To score 6 goals and "threaded the needle" with passes to my teammates on my 5 assists? Hell yes I did! Now, were those realistic expectations given my experience and familiarity with the game? No, they weren't. Does that mean, then, that I shouldn't play the game, or that I shouldn't try those things? absolutely not. That's something I've learned over the years. You cannot be afraid to try new things. You also have to to try to do well at them, even if they are difficult or the chances of success minimal. I can't control how good our girls soccer team is, but I can control how hard I try and the risks I take.

Bottom line, risks are good, sometimes, and you should take them. Being afraid of failure means being afraid to do anything new or expose your weaknesses to anyone. Let's face it. Not all of us can be good at everything. We all excel at some things, and struggle with others. Some people are just better at showing everyone what they are good at. Some people are better at exploiting the weaknesses of others. My wife, for example, knows how to get me to do the laundry, but I digress.

Back to the original point. I don't hate losing bets because I hate losing, or because I'm afraid to be wrong. I just hate paying up at the end. I hate parting with the dollars in my wallet, or the vodka in my freezer (yes, I bet friends vodka, because I have nice vodka.). I have a sick obsession with holding on to money. Try to get it from me and I might kill you. Win it from me in a bet, and I'll pay you, but that's the only reason I'll be upset.
Here's where I waited for almost 20 minutes yesterday to pay up on a bet I made with a friend... I had to order a Caramel Frappuccino and give my real name (embarrassment).
Here's to taking risks, no matter the odds.
