Everyone

If you watched the Super Bowl then you probably know what I'm going to talk about. If you didn't, then oh well, just go with it.

Everyone, all of us, even the smartest, most accomplished, and most intelligent are... human. All of us have lapses in judgment. We all make mistakes. Even Darrell Bevell, the offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, a man considered for multiple head coaching positions in both the NFL and a College Football, a man Pete Carroll  trusted with his offensive since 2011, makes mistakes. Sometimes mistakes are costly. Sometimes they cost you a friendship. Sometimes they cost you a grade. Sometimes they cost you a time (in jail, or detention, or somewhere else), and sometimes the cost is much, much worse. Sometimes your decisions cost other people something. Darrel Bevell will have to live with the fact that his seemingly bonehead call cost the entire Seahawks roster a Super Bowl ring. It cost the Pacific Northwest the right to call itself the home of the NLF Champions for a second straight year. His decision cost the Legion of Boom and the 12th man the chance to cement themselves as one of the truly great stories in recent sports history.

All that being said, it doesn't make him an idiot. No matter what people do to his Wikipedia page, his home, or his car. No matter if NLF and NCAA programs decide, based on that one play call, to look elsewhere for someone to lead them, Darrell Bevell is still a smart, intelligent man. I'll refrain from any kind of cliche statement, but Bevell deserves, and will likely get, a second chance. At the same time, he also has to live with the decision he made and the consequences of that decision.

So, this morning, as a drink my espresso and think about how elated all of  New England must be as they drive to work this morning, I wish Darrell Bevell and his family a few days of peace and quiet. He'll reflect, he'll learn from his mistake (if you can even call it that), and he'll be better for it.

Just because you make, or have made, a mistake, doesn't mean your life is over. It just means you have to move on and earn another shot and whatever it is you want. Failure is normal. Although it is is hard to accept, it is acceptable. It is necessary. It fosters growth. It builds character. Failure is good.

Sincerely,
A failure.
