Unlike China, India suffered through long periods of political separation encourage by, among other things, the caste system. Although periodic unity was possible, in the long-run the caste system, and religious division in general, proved too divisive for any lasting unity.
This does not mean, however, that all social and cultural progress stopped due to political stagnation. Trade in the Indian Ocean basin was not only lucrative, but proved to be invaluable in the spread of goods, services, and culture during the Post-Classical Era.
